Weekly Thoughts (Blog Over-Saturation etc)
Saturday, May 06, 2006

I've decided my blog needs a weekly round up of my general views and thoughts on the anime related things in the week. Usually I'll do this on a Sunday, but doing it earlier this week as I probably won't have time tomorrow.

The "hot topic" within the blogging community right now (after a discussion on Blogsuki) seems to be the over-saturation of anime blogs. In that there are lots of blogs blogging the same thing over and over again. This in turn has spawned posts on the subject on various blogs. Jpmeyer and Tjhan both did very in-depth posts on the subject both going into ways to increase your blogging readership and the like, making your blog stand out. While I felt these posts made some excellent points and contained great tips, I realized that I myself don't really think about hits that much. Sure it's nice to know you have a readership that are enjoying your posts and since being added to Blogsuki and Anime Antenna aswell as starting my blogroll my hits have shot up a great deal. However, I found myself agreeing with a post by Bluemist the most, in that I blog because I like talking about anime (specifically shoujo-ai/yuri which is what my blog is all about) and that's all there is too it. I dont mind not being unique, I write about what I enjoy and if a lot of people on RSS feeds I'm on enjoy blogging the same things I really don't mind. I like reading other peoples views on the same things. As long as you enjoy writing your blog isn't that what the main priority should be? Having fun?

Other stuff to talk about this week other than blog saturation. I'm going back and watching various older shows I didn't watch first time round. Gradually making my way through the very relaxing Aria and the fairly entertaining Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha this week so expect some full thoughts on them soon. Other than the three shows I'm blogging I'm currently watching Ray, Ouran (although a bit behind with this), and have delved into a few other titles recently like Jyu-Oh-Sei which isn't my usual kind of show but well worth checking out. GONZO have managed to impress me for the first time since Burst Angel with their Witchblade anime which after the trainwrecks of titles they produced last year surprised me by being something I enjoyed.

My current favourite series I'm following remains as Simoun, based largely on the fact that I see great potential in it's story if/when it finally gets in gear. Hopefully it will and won't have episode after episode of angst with no real aim.

Anyway, thats my thoughts for the week. More again soon!

It's ironic that the latest discussion has lead to an over-saturation of topics dealing with the very same subject :)

I'm just in the process of getting my latest blog up and running (thanks blogger.com for the handy template crash), and after reading all this latest stuff, I've realized that what I'm doing really isn't going lend itself well to starting discussion or a community, nor appeal to many people most likely

But on the flipside, I've had far more fun working on the first post than I had on any of my old material. So hopefully that will be enough to keep me chugging along (it is nice to know that your opinions are reaching some audience however

At the end of the day a blog is supposed to be about what you personally want to write about so anyone who puts hit numbers first is forgetting why they're writing in the first place! I know that my blog doesn't get a large number of visitors and I sure won't make it onto these blog hub sites that I neither know nor care much about but I write about what interests me, read and take recommendations from friends' blogs and I'm fine with that. If other people want to write about stuff purely to get them noticed, that's up to them.

Not being familiar with the whole blogging thing for long I don't know how recent a problem this is but surely it's to be expected that a lot of people cover similar shows if they're popular among fans? Besides, the more reviews of a show you have access to, the clearer an idea you have of it!

crayotic - good luck with your new blog! Hope you don't mind that I've added it to my blogroll!

It's certainly good to know your blog has some audience for sure, and I'm glad that I have readers! Comments and feedback from your readers are always great things to have too. But my main point was, if I didnt enjoy writing my blog there wouldnt be a blog here for people to read in the first place.

Martin - I agree with you that the more views of a show you have the clearer the picture. It dosen't bother me if twelve people blog the same episode of one show, surely it shows that a show is popular? I mean Haruhi is the show of the moment right now and theres lots of posts on it for sure, but everyones opinion is just as valid for airing as anothers. I dont really see the amount of anime blogs out there as "over saturation" merely a wide variety of choice. Which I think is a good thing!

I love your Nanoha pic! It really accents them as a couple. One of my fave shoujo-ai ones. :)

Will be doing a blog post on Nanoha season 1 later this week, probably almost entirely on the subject of the shoujo-ai!

This is out of point but I'd be glad if you answer it. Which blog is better? Blogspot or livejournal? What would you recommend?

Well I'd say Blogger is better than livejournal for anime blogging. But there are other blogging sites out there like Wordpress you may prefer. Probably a good idea to try them all and see how you find them.
