Simoun 09

This week on Simoun: Dark secret plots, Corp Tempus is doomed?, and a fair share of aerial action.

Unlike last week where we saw the Corp Tempus taking off from the stricken Arcus Prima this episode rewinds a bit as we see them rush through the vessel to their Simoun's Neviriru taking the lead as they run through the carnage. Neviriru once again shows the strength of her character here (now she seems to have recovered) as it's her presence that is bringing the squad forward. Nevriru and Aeru kiss to start their Simoun (from the first time since episode two), which to me will hopefully signify the start of them flying together frequently so an actual romantic relationship can build.

Flying out to defend the Arcus Prima the Corp Tempus seem very unified for the first time in a while and it is evidently Neviriru's presence which is causing this. Neviriru opens her Simoun top mid-flight and stands in the cockpit the wind sweeping her hair dramatically. It's a seriously impressive scene as she surveys the battle before taking action. The Simoun's carry out a maneuver known as a Kongoseki Ri-Mergion which creates a force field around the Arcus Prima, allowing it to escape. As always this is visually stunning to see just like the majority of this show, the crackling forcefield saving the day and Cor Tempus truly working as a team. Evidently this is a huge boost to the teams confidence and they can be proud of themselves, however they are still informed to disband. Everyone starts to get ready for the final "goodbye" ceremony while Neviriru and her father attend a meeting on the matter. One interesting thing I noticed here is the way Yuun protects Mamiina (who is still down) from the other comments, and the second point of interest is that a member of the Corp Tempus doesn't seem to be around. That would be Dominura.

Dominura meeting with shady guys. Can't say I was exactly surprised by this, she looks a bit sinister herself at times even in the opening sequence. It seems Dominura is part of a secret plan involving the Corp Tempus and is reporting to those orchestrating it in secret. The shadowy figures aren't too happy with her but she assures them that everything is fine and that Corp Tempus is getting stronger with some various members with outstanding talents. The shadowy figures (who really scare me with their old mens bodies but rather shrill female voices), order her to move on with the plan. What exactly that plan is remains to be seen of course but evidently a big new plot is revealing itself here. Is Dominura evil? Is she planning to use the Corp Tempus for something? It is definitely clear here that the skills of the Corp Tempus are to be manipulated for something.

There, you can have some yaoi in this series too! If you squint..

Time for the hearing, and Neviriru is very assertive as per has been fitting her character lately, trying to speak over those of accusing Corp Tempus of bringing shame upon the Simoun Corps by their behaviour (the fighting between Aeru and Mamiina seems to be the main thing that sprang to mind here). The council members try and stop her from talking but they in turn are overruled by the priestess from the spring way back in episode 2, the ever creepy (but quite useful in the case) Onashia. Much to the shock of those around, Neviriru speaks openly on how she feels and in a very headstrong matter. It's clear she knows how she feels now and the time for bedroom angst is over. Onashia seems to be impressed by this and along with the testimony of another pilot who backs the Cor Tempus named Viura things seem to be going well for them.

The whole trial seemed really designed to put over Neviriru's assertive personality fully. After the way she has been behaving since episode one, it is now clear that she is back to her old self and is the type of girl that doesn't take any crap. While she may still look like an inflatable love doll, she earned brownie points with me here for just showing how strong willed she can be.

Outside, the Corp Tempus (at least the ten members there) are doing a Ri-Mergion for everyone to see. However an enemy attack is suddenly in full swing and these ships seems to be of the kamikaze variety, heading to crash into the base. Of course the Cor Tempus attack and soon the action is in full swing, but there are so many ships coming things are too much without a big Ri-Mergion attack, and they don't have enough members to carry out one.

Neviriru (and Viura) to the rescue! They fly a Simoun into combat bolstering the squads numbers enough to carry out a super powerful attack pattern and destroy the enemy vessels. Everyone is ok! The Corp Tempus have been spared and shall continue to fly together. There a brief scene here with everyone leaning out their cockpits, smiling happy relaxed and things going really well. It's one of the happiest moments in the show for a long time and is free from the drama and angst of the past. However... There are obviously still plenty more trials to come for our heroines.

Finally at the end of the episode as the Corp Tempus arrive at their new base (as the Arcus Prima remains damaged) Dominura watches sinisterly from above... she obviously has something in mind for the rest of the cast and from the look on her face it certainly won't be pleasant.

While it isn't the best episode so far, this week represents a turning point in the plot and is of an amazing quality. Neviriru is done her angsting, the Simoun pilots seem to be more united and it's clear that they have a new trial to face in whatever Dominura is planning. The way this show deals with the lives of those involved in the war over the war itself is one of the things I love the most about it as it paints such strong emotion in doing so. Episode 10 is less than a week away now, and I can't wait to see it.

I always enjoy your summaries but it seems that Doremi are just going to put me further and further back... Only the first 3 have been fansubbed and I'm wondering whether it would be worth it to watch the raws even if I won't understand them?

Zero, check out the "Simoun" forum on animesuki.com, or the "Yuricon" mailing list on Yahoo groups; there are English-language summaries there that should give you enough information to watch the raws and understand what's going on.

There's also likely to be another fansubbing group working on the series soon....

Beat me to it, the summaries on Yuricon in particular are great (really good of you to put the time in to do them Futaba-chan) and theres plenty of summaries out there such as Animesuki. Its worth watching the raws especially with those kind of resources available for those who can't follow them.

Ah, cool. Thanks to both of you. I'll try to get around to watching them and reading the summaries over the next few days.

Exams are making things awkward though. <.<
At least I'll be completely finished high school soon. ^^

Dominura herself seems to have personal issues about the plan.

It's certainly possible Dominura isn't keen on what shes doing, we will just have to wait and see. Episode 10 tomorrow!
