Pieta 2
Friday, December 30, 2005

Last time In Pieta we left Rio laying in Sahoko's arms after jumping from the roof. Fortunately she dosen't die (hooray, in most yuri manga she would have!) and is taken to hospital. The majority of this volume is then spent with Sahoko and Rio's counseller visiting her. Rio's counseller begins to understand just how important Sahoko is to Rio and how close the two girls really are. Because of the marked improvement in Rio despite her protests of Sahoko visiting (she thinks her unpredicatable nature will hurt her). The main overall menace to the pairs happiness in this volume is Rio's stepmother going out of her way to try and get Rio locked away in a mental hospital. However, her mind is soon changed after a rather bizarre incident involving property of Rio's she is trying to destroy catching fire and damaging most of the house.

To be 100% fair, little actually happens in this volume it's slow paced and dialouge heavy as Rio and Sahoko fall in love deeper and deeper, eventually getting their own home and living together. To be honest while it wasn't exciting it was so nice to see the pair happy, and have a happy ending to the story I didnt mind the lack of drama. Both Rio and Sahoko are genuinally likeable and with a bonus chapter at the end of the volume focussing purely on a little holiday they take together, everything ends almost like a fairytale. It gives you a warm fuzzy feeling, Yay!. A refreshing change from the usual "She killed herself/broke my heart/ went off with another woman/guy/fish" etc.. , not that I dislike my drama and angst you understand.... , its just this time a happy ending was perfect.

Of course, this approach of happy endings isn't for everyone and the volume could easily be seen as dull if you don't like happy endings. Fortunately though. I do!
